This semester, UMD locked and loaded a new student-organization – the Rifle and Pistol Club, but the Maryland General Assembly also passed one of the country’s strictest gun control bills in March. The new bill, called the Firearm Safety Act of 2013, is awaiting the Gov. Martin O’Malley’s signature and bans more than 45 different kinds of weapons, limits ammo clips to 10 rounds and orders new background checks on gun buyers. Despite their opposition to the bill’s ability to lower gun violence, members of the Rifle and Pistol Club say gun control doesn’t make a difference in how they practice and introduce willing students to the world of shooting sports and responsible gun ownership.

Royal flush at Maryland Live! Casino

On April 1, Maryland Live! Casino introduced table games like roulette, blackjack, and craps to their regular playing services. As expected many students are eager to test their luck as soon as possible. But is this desire something new, or has been a problem lingering on the campus for a while. After talking with some fellow students, it’s clear that gambling on campus is now threatening to become a serious issue. In fact, some students are spending thousands of dollars a week on their gambling habits, and they don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon.

April 29th, all of the Jewish organizations came together on campus to host a festival in celebration of Israel. They hoped it would give students of this University a higher sense of connection with the Jewish state. Max Grossfeld covered the event, and has the story.

The University of Maryland has one of the largest Jewish student populations in the country, meaning a strong connection to Israel, the Jewish homeland, is to be expected. President Loh just came to a new agreement with several universities in Israel which has strengthened the university’s ties academically. In addition, the Jewish student organizations on campus held their annually Israelfest on Monday, April 29, in order to strengthen ties culturally. Max Grossfeld covered that event.

Cigarette butts like these will no longer be dispersed around the UMD campus. The smoking ban will not only promote the health of students and faculty, but will also clean up campus.
A smoking ban will be in affect on all UMD Campuses starting July 1, 2013. As of now, the university doesn’t have the resources to carry out this ban to the full extent, so the campus community will rely on students and faculty to remind others of the smoking policy. This is all in an effort to promote the health of both smokers and non smokers.

Flu Epidemic

The Assistant Director for Health Promotions at the University of Maryland’s Health Center, Hope McPhatter, spoke with TWE’s Judy Nam about this year’s flu season. According to the Center for Disease Control, the virus is one of the most deadly in recent history and continues to reach epidemic levels this month after dozens of deaths nationwide. McPhatter says university health officials are making a concerted push to get students vaccinated and are working around the clock to aid the growing number of students who are already infected.

Hope McPhatter, the assistant director for Health Promotions at UMD’s Health Center works around the clock to educate students on how to prevent getting the flu during this spring semester. McPhatter says spring is the peak time when the flu virus is most prevalent, which also makes this season one of the busiest for staff members at the university’s Health Center because students, faculty and staff are all eager to come in and learn how to prevent infection. She says getting the flu vaccine is the best possible way to avoid the virus. But if you unfortunately do get the flu, then you can always call the Health Center’s Urgent Care line and they will help you take the next step by telling you whether or not you should seek treatment at the clinic or just wait it out by resting in bed.

The goal of the rifle and pistol club, however, is to convey the positive side of gun use. a side not often displayed, he says, in the media.

The feelings lawmakers and citizens have toward gun control vary depending on factors such as political party, socioeconomic status and personal relationship with firearms. The University of Maryland’s rifle and pistol club believes that feelings can be skewed due to the media.

Disability Housing Improving on Campus

Many students at Maryland complain about walking long distances across campus, but for others, it’s hard just to get up the stairs. In the early 2000s, the university had a shortage of housing for students with disabilities, but a decade long effort has brought about dramatic change.

University of Maryland bookstore employee Justin Smith stacks and rearranges textbooks for students to purchase. Maryland Legislators will decide this year whether or not to pass two bills that would eliminate the six percent sales tax from textbook purchases for students.

Maryland lawmakers are trying to find ways to cut the cost of higher education to make it easier on students. This year Maryland State Legislators have proposed two bills that would eliminate sales tax on students’ textbooks. One of the bills would eliminate taxes year round and the other would eliminate them the first two weeks before each semester.

Given the current state of student loan debt, are text books too expensive?  Tweet us @LeslieSpacek or @twe368 to let us know how you feel, #studentdebtcrisis.

Not sure what to think?…Brush up on the issue below:

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York just released its latest Household Debt and Credit Reportwhich states that outstanding student loan debt now stands at $966 billion, up $10 billion from the previous quarter. According to the report, student loans are now the “largest consumer liability after mortgages” and total student debt has nearly tripled since 2004.

Forbes reported that “Tuition has consistently increased faster than inflation and household income, to the point that it is now four times more expensive to attend college than it was a generation ago. The result is that the average college senior carries $25,000 in student loans at graduations.”

The Student Debt Crisis:  Rising student debt, paired with rising tuition costs has led some industry experts to coin the student debt crisis as the  “Student Loan Bubble” or “Higher Education Bubble”  - predicting that student loan defaults (much like the “Housing Bubble” when sub-prime mortgage defaults led to the housing crisis) will be the cause of our nation’s next big recession.

But, as is the case with all speculative economic predictions, there are many detractors of this theory, as well. Check out this article from TIME: Stop Calling Student Loans a “Bubble”!

Campus Police Keep UMD Students Safe

Maryland basketball and rioting are synonymous with one another, especially since March of 2010 when students and police clashed following the victory over ACC-rival Duke. Three years later, Maryland defeated Duke once again in College Park, but the interaction between students and police was drastically different. The same ingredients existed in both cases — a big upset against Duke, students celebrating downtown and heavy police presence. So why was the celebration in 2013 so different than 2010?

About a month before that week of fun, boys and girls must buckle down and hit the gym to shed as many calories as they can to look their best. This means that the gym is more packed than usual, especially after classes during the peak hours, and students sometimes have to wait as long as half an hour to get on an elliptical.
